Chapter 5: Coffee Break

I blinked as I stared through my drenched hair at the blank wall separating my bathroom from my room. I laid on my stomach with my left cheek was pressed against my pillow. My lips were parted as I was breathing through my mouth.
My eyes didn't catch any sleep.
I closed my eyes for a second and moments from my previous night rushed back into my sight.
Screaming kids filled it, her voice...….. I gulped at that thought, her voice...………..
An overflowing bath with...………..
I opened my eyes quickly, pushed myself off my bed trying to shake of those thoughts as they sent a shiver down my spine.
I was cold, as sweaty as I was, I was cold to my bones.
I looked down at my pillow, bedsheets, and blanket they were soaked. My pyjamas were drenched as well and my body was covered in sweat, the result of trying to survive last night.
I am fine, this is only momentarily due to my stress.
I am fine.
I dangled my legs into the side of the bed and grabbed the glass of water on my bedside table not realizing it was empty, I was parched. It felt like I had a walk through the hot summer of the Rub' al Khali in KSA, but I was cold at the same time. I put the glass back while looking at the my digital clock that declared it was 5 AM. Right next to it laid the medications I took the night before, my failed attempt of trying to get some sleep.

"1,2,3...………" I started as I headed into my bathroom to get shower and get my morning started.

After showering, getting dressed, and grooming my hair. I headed into my kitchen. I started my coffee machine as I looked at the little filled container Hayat Teyze gave me last night.
Luka came around 7 last night with my towed car and forced me to go dine in their house. His excuse was him being carless. We drove to their house I had my dinner and came back.
Hayat Teyze also made me some pastry for my breakfast.
But I had no appetite whatsoever.
"Coffee will do today." I said in a low voice.
Finally I walked out of my house, but before leaving. I stood in front of the mirror in my hallway.
I straightened my tie and readjusted my grey suit as I coughed a bit to clear out my throat.
I took a deep breath then stared at my reflection "Okay Nikola, you are fine. You got this young man." I said in a loud, proud voice.
I looked at myself one last time as,
I put on my mask with a smirk.

I stood, with my back to the door, facing the glass window that displayed the highway. Beautiful view, I thought to myself.
The office was quite I could almost hear the highway from up here.
After a few minutes, the sounds outside grew louder announcing the arrival of someone important. I could hear her giving orders as her heals musically tapped the floor, growing louder as she approached the door.
The secretary announced as the door was opened "You have a visitor."
She went silent for a second, I smiled to myself and nodded to myself.
Then her secretary went "I asked him if he had an appointment, he said you will want to meet to me." My smile only grew wider while listening to that.
She took a deep breath then proceeded to say "It is okay, you may leave Mia."

As the door shut, I finally turned around, with a smirk plastered upon my face. "Good morning Janu hanım" I said in a playful voice.

She took a deep breath and finally took a step into her office "Good morning." she said in a serious tone. I raised an eyebrow to that, so that's how we will play, okay by me.

"Do you mind?" I said while sitting down, asking for half a permission.

"Go ahead as if you already hadn't!" she replied.

I let out a little laugh, which made her roll her eyes at me.

"Are we pissed at me?!" I asked in a smug tone.
"Are you serious?!" She asked while raising her eyebrows at me. I shrugged in response which made her grunt back at me.
She turned around and walked over to her coffee corner, which had a kettle, a Nespresso machine, cups, and coffee pods and sugar.
She turned around and asked me "What would you like to drink?!"
"Turkish coffee, handmade please.' I said while smirking and winking 'You may add salt to it, I don't mind at all."
She looked up and took a deep breath trying to contain herself. I was implying drinking our engagement coffee from her hands.
She turned her back on me and said while placing the coffee pod "Machine-made Turkish coffee it is then."
"You said you knew me the other day." I said while getting and walking over to her. She froze at my words, her hand stuck to the cup she was preparing for me.
She cleared her thought then said in a sarcastic tone "Who doesn't?! The great crime lawyer touching the younger generations and changing the world for the better."
I let out a laugh as I rubbed the back of my neck, this girl makes me laugh, honestly.
Janu was turning on the kettle to prepare a cup of tea for herself.
"No, no not like that." I said as I approached her left side.
She turned towards me and shook her head in bewilderment, her hand was lifting the sugar container.
"You and I met." I finally said. As I said that Janu dropped the glass container. I stretched out my right hand and caught it midair, sending the wrapped sugar cubes flying and falling all around.
Janu kneeled down and started collecting the sugar cubes, I followed her to help her out. She avoided my eyes, but I wanted her to look at me. We collected them one by one and coming the one to my right I made sure I left it to the very last. As she went to grab it, I made sure my hand touched hers.
At last she looked up at me with her wild brown eyes, I stared at her and whispered "You and I met. I remember you." I said with a smile.

*
(8 years a go)

I stood in the far end of the big presentation hall, in my black suit and necktie. I was at this conference, it was about the crimes we face in the society, how to fight, and prevent them. I was there as the MC, I was only 24 years old at the time, the youngest speaker.
I announced the coffee break around 10:30.
I stood among a big circle of lawyers. I was looking for an excuse to walk away from them, I was growing a bit bored of the same talk. So I decided to walk over the coffee table.
I grabbed a cup and placed it into the coffee machine. Out of nowhere Judge Mehmet approached me and congratulated me on my success, I smiled and slightly bowed back at him.
When he left, I turned to grab my cup but a young girl was taking it. She stood out between the serious suits in her colorful dress.
I smiled at myself and walked up to her, I unintentionally startled her by when I said "Sorry, that's my cup."
"Sorry, I, I..... didn't know." She replied, embarrassed. Her face was looking at me adorably terrified and her soft brown eyes were something I couldn't describe with words. They were innocent, pure, and beautiful. Beautiful in how she was looking at me, rather than how they physically appeared. She looked away depriving me the beauty of her eyes.
"It is okay. Take it' I said smiling trying to calm her, she was about to argue back but I added 'I insist."
"Thank you." She said in a quite voice looking away straight ahead at the coffee table.
I filled my second cup and said "By the way, my name is Nikola."
She took a sugar cube and handed it to me with a precious smile as she said "Nice to meet you, my name is ….."
But she was interrupted, we were interrupted by a loud pack of my collegemates coming between us, to congratulate me.
I got distracted by them for the next few minutes.
And when I finally managed to free myself from them, she was gone.

Janu pulled the last sugar cube from my hand and stood up, after I shared with her the memory of how we met.
"Yeah, so?!!!" was her only reply as she crossed her arms.
I looked at her trying to make sense of the lady standing in front of me, while I moved into my feet.
"We both have grew and changed haven't we?!' I said. 'But one thing haven't. Your beautiful eyes, they have only grew intriguingly wild." I said while pointing at her eyes.
She directed her gaze away from my eyes, then opened her mouth to protest, but couldn't find any words in reply to my unshy remark.
I smirked at her as I started walking backwards. I shrugged then put my hands up as if surrendering.
"See you at court Janu Leka." I said as I opened the door. I looked at her for the last time as I smirked and winked. I finally sent her a flying kiss while waving before disappearing out of her sight.
