Chapter 34: Crossroads

Janu POV:
The old lady placed our cups of tea on the table, before handing the bill over to Nikola.
"Can you please split it in half?!" Nikola requested as he held the bill up to her.
The old lady and I exchanged a surprised look.
"She doesn't like it when I pay her bill." Nikola stated without bothering to look at me.
"Tamam I can pay it myself." I said annoyed, pulling the bill from his hand.
"Hayir I will pay half of it." he said flatly, still not looking at me.
This was an absolute torture, he had his entire meal without looking at me, not even once.
And now this.
"Tamam here." I said sliding the bill up the table towards him.
As I withdrew my hand back, I slammed the tea cup spilling it on my blouse.
I pulled the shirt off my chest as I stood up shouting "Allah kahretsin. Aaaaaaahhhhhh."
Nikola got up from his seat knocking his chair back in the process, then he started to shout "Aptal. Can't you be more careful?!"
The old said something but I couldn't hear it as I shouted retorted back, shouting "Sana ne?!"
"Watch your tone' he threatened 'go wash up."
I sneered at him before following the old lady into the washroom.

"Ouuffff ya Jnau. What kind of day is this?!" I mumbled as I dried my blouse with toilet papers, leaving remnants of tissue behind.
I balled the toilet paper, I threw it aiming at the trash can.
But I missed it by a feet or two.
I lifted my head letting out a moan of despair. "Aahhhhh"
I walked over to where the soggy ball fell. I picked it up, then threw it into the trashcan.
"AAHHHHH" I let out a shriek when I left the washroom.
I was startled by a figure standing exactly next to the washroom door.
"No need for all of that excitement at seeing me." Nikola said flatly looking ahead.
He was standing there with his left hand flexed holding a black sweeter.
"Ne bu?!" I questioned.
"It might be a wedding dress, but am not quite sure." he said sarcastically with a neutral unbothered expression.
He was still not looking at me.
"Hahahah not funny."
"Well am not the one asking what a sweeter is in here." he stated smirking to himself.
I licked my lips trying to hold back from choking him with that sweeter.
"I don't want it." I responded.
I took a step forward, but he also took one blocking my way.
"Move out of my way." I ordered.
"You are already sick. Wear it." he demanded as he pushed it into my hands.
"Bedaka bedaka sana ne? Who are you to me?!"
I was fuming at this point.
His eyes snapped in my direction "Ja-Noo"

He finally was looking at me, but I wish he wasn't. He was infuriated.

"What are you two fighting over this time?!" asked the old day.
"I don't want to wear that." I said crossing my arms and turning away from Nikola.
"Wear it." he said firmly.

"I will not. Who are you to buy me a sweeter?! Thank you very much, but I can buy my own clothes, with my own money. No one in here asked for your money." I struck back, confidently staring into his angry eyes.
"Kizim I got you that sweeter, I didn't want you to get sick."
"Oh." I said looking down.
Nikola silently pushed it into my hands and turned on his heels and walked away.
"Kizim what in the world are you doing?! Must you insult him in such a way?!"
"I don't even know at this point." I said swallowing hard.
I leaned against the wall, where he was standing, clutching the sweeter against my chest.
I don't think it was humanly possible to piss him of any further.

Nikola and I stood in the hustle of the Friday bazar in the small village, after the most awkward longest car ride.
He and I didn't exchange a word, I just followed him around.
Seriously! This is where he wanted to drop by before leaving town?!
I slid my hands into my pockets, shifting my body weight into my left leg before sighing deeply.
I didn't object much and how could I?!
"How beautiful is this?!" Nikola stated as he held up a beautiful burgundy glass stone with a golden chain.
"How much is this?!" Nikola asked the young girl that was selling handmade necklaces.

I looked over at him "You don't have to buy one for me."
"Don't worry I will never buy you a thing." he replied quietly, looking at more designs.
"100TL." the girl replied.
"What if I took more than one?!" he asked.
"90 TL for each."
"And for me?!" Nikola said with a cheeky smile.
I started chewing the inside of my cheeks.
Seriously!
I am given the cold shoulder, but everyone else get your sweet charming self.
"80 TL last price." she said smiling back.
"Guzel I will take two then." he said with a huge grin.
How annoying are you and your dimples!
I tiptoed around, peaking under his elbow at the necklaces in his hand.
He held a blue butterfly necklace, he was eying it with a wide smile "It will look beautiful on her."
"Who are these for?!" I asked.
"Don't worry none is for you." he said back.
"So you are handling two ladies at once?!"
"Evet ama sana ne?!" he replied shaking his head at me.
"Evet true bana ne?! BANA NE?!" I said annoyed walking away.
"BANA NE JANU?!" I scolded myself as the little shop caught my attention.
"Don't even think about it.' he warned from behind me 'don't even try testing me Janu hanim."
I smiled as I looked at the ice-cream shop.
So you still care about me.

SYML - Where's My Love
I sat quietly in the car as we drove along across the cotton fields outside the little village.
I stared at the cotton fields, while Nikola kept scrolling through his playlist. It seemed like he was looking for a particular song.
He finally stopped his long search.
That song!
Without much thought I outstretched my hand to change it.
"Don't touch my radio." he ordered.
"I don't want to listen to it." I argued back.
"It is my radio don't touch it." he said pushing my left hand away.
"Yeter with this stupid song, I have to hear it all the time." I stated as I reached for the radio again.
"Ja....Janoooo" he called as he his hand reached for mine.
He intertwined his long fingers around my left wrist, but I didn't let that stop me. My right hand reached for the AUX extension cable, pulling it out and making the song stop.
"YETER" Nikola roared brining the car to a stop.
Nikola pulled me by the wrist towards him, he was looking directly at me as he repeated in a low voice, closer to a whisper "Yeter."
He let go of my wrist as he quickly stepped out of the car. And as he did so, I felt my heart sinking. That exact feeling when he walked out of his office a year ago.
I looked over at him, swallowing hard.
Will he abandon me in here?! My punishment?!
I looked around, at where the car stopped.

We were at a crossroads. One way would lead back home, while the other would take us to the unknown.
Nikola started to roughly run his hands into his hair, making his curls stick in every direction.
He started to walk away from the car in the direction that lead back to village.
I turned around watching him closely. He ran his hands again in his hair, before tugging hard on his hair.
I slowly unfastened my seatbelt and followed him outside.
As I took my first step, he turned around to face me.
"Janu I cannot do this anymore. I thought I could ,but I cant. This is exhausting and draining me."
"Are you leaving me halfway?!"
"Never." he shock his head.
"Then what can you not do?! You promised me you will work on this case with me and that we will win this case." I argued back.
"Evet I did and you will win this case. When we get back to Istanbul, I will hand to you everything I collected. And whatever I will find, I will email it or mail it to your office. I wont bother you anymore."
"What is it then that you cannot do?!" I asked confused
He let out a sigh bringing his hands to his wait "I am tired of this endless tug war Janu.' he bit his lower lip before adding 'You keep pushing me away."
"Ama…" I tried to object.
"You are refusing me in every way possible. You are burning me every time I outstretch a helpful hand to you. You are tilting my balance. I cannot do this back and forth."
I opened my mouth but I couldn't retort back.
Judging by how he bit down on his lips then he squeezed his eyes shut, I just knew whatever he will say next I wont like.

"We shouldn't force what is not meant to be."
His words paralyzed me in my spot, chocking me up. I just stood watching him walk back to his car.
'This wasn't an ordinary crossroads' I thought as my eyes teared up watching how Nikola's fingers wrapped around the car's handle, pulling it to open it.

Remember this is a crossroads. Winky face.

Have a great night ya all.
